Blood bank — step by step
Who does the work at each step, and what the software does. Press a step to stop on it.
- 1 Donor and bag Blood bank The donor’s group, the bag number, the component and its expiry; bags from outside organisations too.
- 2 Five screening tests Lab HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, malaria — a bag is used only once all five are negative.
- 3 Request and cross-match Doctor and blood bank Only bags the patient can receive are offered; nothing issued without a cross-match.
- 4 The bedside check Nurse and a second person Started only for the patient it was issued to; a reaction tells everybody at once.
Requests
The doctor’s requests, the urgent first
The doctor asks for blood for an admitted patient with the group, the component, the units and the reason. The blood bank sees what is urgent, which bag is held for whom, and how many are still to issue.
- Only compatible groups — no Rh-positive red cells to an Rh-negative patient
- Uncross-matched only in an emergency, with the reason written
The shelf
How many bags of each group, and which are near their date
Bags ready to issue, by component and group, in one table. A bag near its date is marked, and so is one still waiting for screening. A bag past its date is taken off by itself.
- A reactive screen discards the bag and marks the donor
- Issued blood goes on the bill at the hospital’s own price
