The blood bank
Donors and bags, five screening tests, matching blood for each request, cross-match, issue and the bedside check.
- In Blood bank record donors and bags; a bag is used only once HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and malaria are all negative.
- The doctor asks for blood from the stay; only bags the patient can receive are offered, their own group first.
- Cross-match and issue — never uncross-matched except in an emergency, with the reason.
- At the bedside a nurse and a second person check the bag and start; a reaction tells everybody at once.
